Abstract

Sustainability is becoming an essential part of project management, integrating considerations for the economy, environment and society into how projects are planned and executed. This thesis explores the role of sustainability in project management, looking at why it matters, the challenges involved and how it can be effectively included in project practices. The study highlights the need to move beyond traditional project management, which focuses mainly on time, scope and cost, often neglecting long-term impacts. The main research question investigates how sustainability can be integrated into project management to balance these important aspects.

Chapter 1 introduces the concept of sustainability in project management, explains the problem and sets out the research question. It stresses the importance of addressing issues like climate change and resource depletion through sustainable practices.

Chapter 2 reviews existing theories and research, highlighting gaps in the literature and setting the foundation for this study.

Chapter 3 describes the research method, which includes surveys of project managers to gather their insights. This chapter also covers how data was collected and analyzed and discusses ethical considerations.

Chapter 4 presents the survey results, showing how sustainability is currently being integrated into project management, the challenges faced and the benefits observed. It offers a detailed analysis of these findings.

Chapter 5 concludes the thesis by discussing what these results mean for project management practice and theory, suggesting areas for future research and providing recommendations for better integrating sustainability. The study emphasizes the need for a comprehensive approach that considers long-term environmental, social and economic impacts, ensuring that projects contribute positively to future generations.
