Abstract
This qualitative study explored how adopting a holistic view in project management may support natural and holistic skincare product development. The study focused on the interconnected challenges involved in product development, the effects of fragmented decision-making, and the potential benefits of greater cross-functional coordination. Data were collected from 13 current and former professionals with experience in skincare and personal care product development across project management, product management, formulation and R&D, sourcing and supply chain, quality and regulatory, and manufacturing and operations. Thematic analysis identified six themes related to interconnected development challenges, competing project priorities, cascading effects of project decisions, fragmented cross-functional coordination, integrated and proactive project coordination, and improved project outcomes and stakeholder alignment. The findings indicated that decisions made within one project function can create downstream effects across other areas and that earlier involvement of relevant stakeholders may help teams identify dependencies and risks before they become larger project issues. Overall, the study suggests that adopting a holistic view may support more informed decision-making related to cost, quality, risk, and stakeholder alignment while emphasizing the involvement of the right stakeholders at the right time.
